Embryonic Stem Cell Research Constitutional Amendment 2 The debate still rages on about Amendment 2 on the ballot this coming November. By now you have probably heard and seen commercials for both sides. Here are some things you may not be aware of:
		The Manipulation Component In order to get this amendment on the ballot, there had to be thousands of signatures. Many people (maybe even you) signed a petition believing they were going to ban human cloning. In fact by voting for this amendment you would constitutionally protect cloning through the process known as “somatic cell nuclear transfer” or “SCNT.”

		The Lie behind it The wording of the amendment on the ballot actually says that it will “ban human cloning.” What it actually does is protect human cloning by SCNT. This is the same process that was used to clone Dolly the sheep a few years ago. An embryo is created in a lab environment and grown to a certain point before it is killed and its’ stem cells “harvested."

		Follow the Money As of the date of this writing, approximately $16 million dollars has been spent promoting Amendment 2 through radio and television commercials. Over $15 million has come from one couple in the Kansas City area who stand to lose a lot of money if the amendment does not pass. They already have buildings standing and in construction to accommodate embryonic stem cell research. Their spokesperson has said that “Without the passage of the stem cell measure,...the institute would call off a plan that would involve adding a new research campus in the state every ten years.” This is a multimillion-dollar expansion that would happen if the amendment passes. This is a threat designed to make people vote yes. While this expansion would have some economic benefit to Missouri, it does not justify the taking of innocent life.

		The Bottom Line The people pushing Amendment 2 have had to twist words, manipulate people and lie to get this initiative on the ballot this November. Science can tell us how things work and sometimes why. It cannot tell us what is right or wrong to do. I would urge you to VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT 2
